Think Kit Dec. 6th - You're going down next year, HJR6!

Today's prompt - > Share how you'd like to get involved in your community during 2014.

My shirt at the Freedom Indiana kick-off this past August
This one is easy.  Despite my volunteer efforts to open a food co-op grocery store in Fountain Square (I'll shamelessly try and sign you up to be a member in a later post) and my desire to go back to the Nice Grant well for volume two of Visualize Indy (consider this the opening salvo in my bid for another grant, Smallboxers), I plan to get more involved in my community by putting boots on the ground in opposition of HJR-6, the proposed bid to change our state constitution to ban gay marriage in Indiana.

Now I've got a lot of snarky comments that I could hurl.  I could drop some rationale that will cut to the bone of any God fearing Christian who claims to believe in love, freedom, apple pie, and America.  But like many heated debates online, those are just words and positions that have been leveed time and time again.  You and I, we don't listen to each other online when it comes to these hyper charged debates.  In 2014, we're pledging to abandon the digital arena for some good old fashion demonstration.

My wife and I have already decided that if it came down to it, we're putting the Ford family on the sidewalks and hallways of the statehouse.  It will be the first time in my life I will take the streets for cause if, for some reason, Governor Pence and our state legislators don't listen to the state's mayors and university leaders, leading state employers, the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, and half of those polled and abandon this selfish, fool hardy attempt at preserving the identity of the Christian conservatives in the state.  Don't get me wrong, I do think I understand why those of you supporting this ban are so adamant about it.  It's become something of an identification criteria for your group.  I get it.  We all try, at some level draw these lines in the sands so we can tell who we are and identify with others like us.  My advice is to find something else to define yourself.  Maybe take a page from this new pope and get behind supporting the poor and income inequality. You're going to catch a lot more flies with honey than vinegar.  But if you persist, the Fords are going to be there in person at our statehouse along with a larger crowd than yours.

Whew! Think Kit, you got me a little worked up here tonight.  Thanks!

  1. Get excited, Jon! If you're passionate, you must be living life with intention.

Best of luck in the campaign in the year ahead.
